This city is situated at the eastern end of Lac Saint-François. It is an industrial centre with a port on the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The Deux-Rives Ecomuseum (Écomusée des Deux-Rives), which covers the economic and cultural history of the region, is found in the city. Salaberry was named after Colonel Charles de Salaberry who served with the British army during the War of 1812. "Valleyfield" came from the Valleyfield Mills, a paper mill south of Edinburgh in Scotland.
